THE LEGEND.
In Big Bend Texas, people told stories about a man who may or may not have been real. Nobody knew where he came from. Only that he appeared without warning, ignored every law of nature and common sense, and left behind flavor strong enough to ruin all other food forever.
One night, a smell rolled through the desert smoke, citrus, fire, something absolutely irresponsible. People dropped what they were doing and followed it straight into a canyon cave glowing red. Inside, chiles crackled over open flame. Fruit dripped into the fire. Garlic got crushed like it owed somebody money. And in the middle of it all stood a man working in total silence while the flames climbed higher like they were trying to impress him.
Nobody spoke. Nobody moved. One guy allegedly cried. Then the man tasted the sauce. The fire dropped low. The cave went still. Somewhere in the distance, a coyote lost confidence. The man gave one tiny nod, poured the sauce into a bottle, and disappeared into the desert before anyone could ask his name.
The desert had its own way of naming things. And this one stuck. El Rey....
Not because he ruled anything but because people followed him without ever seeing his face.
